I Found a Lesion, What Now?
- Discussion with Patient:
- Biopsy: The decision for the general practitioner to do their own biopsy rather than initial referral to a surgeon or other specialist is one of training, comfort with surgery, and what the lesion may appear to be. The type of biopsy performed will be even more dependent on these factors. Consideration should also be given by the practitioner to time to begin cancer treatment, if it might be needed. In many cases, the general practitioner is better off referring timely to an oral surgeon or otolaryngologist so that the process is expedited for the sake of the patient’s outcome of any cancer.
