Grant in Action: Bringing Oral Cancer Screenings to Rural West Virginia

The AGD Foundation’s grants help bring oral health services and potentially life-saving screenings to communities that need them most. In 2026, the Foundation awarded West Virginia Health Right, Inc. a grant supporting its WVHR Mobile Dental Unit, which provides care to patients across six rural West Virginia counties.

With the grant’s support, the mobile dental team expanded its monthly rotation to Jackson County and continued providing comprehensive dental care and oral cancer screenings in communities facing significant transportation, financial, and provider-access barriers. The impact can be seen in the stories of the patients served.

In Logan County, a 44-year-old man arrived with a rapidly growing oral lesion. The dental team immediately recognized the need for further evaluation and referred him to a volunteer oral surgeon. The lesion was removed and biopsied, and thankfully, it was found to be benign. Stories like this demonstrate why routine oral cancer screenings are so important. Early detection can make a critical difference!

The Mobile Dental Unit also helped a 49-year-old man living with terminal metastatic cancer who was struggling with severe tooth sensitivity that made it difficult to eat. The team provided restorative care that eliminated his sensitivity and restored his smile, helping improve his quality of life during an incredibly difficult time.

This is the impact of an AGD Foundation grant. By supporting organizations like West Virginia Health Right, the Foundation helps expand access to oral health care, promote early detection, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients.Applications for the 2027 AGD Foundation Grant Program are now open.
